6 Ways to Stay Motivated and Achieve Your Goals

If there’s one profession that takes guts, determination and hard work, it’s the legal profession. Law students spend years studying hard and developing a work ethic that’s second to none, preparing themselves for a career in the world of Law, so they know a thing or two about sticking to it and reaching goals. We reached out to Redcliffe’s Gleeson Klein Stegeman Lawyers, who overcome challenges on the daily, for advice on how to stay motivated as we prepare for this year’s Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run.

Whether you’re walking, jogging or taking on the big Gleeson Klein Stegeman Lawyers Half Marathon, here are 6 ways to stay motivated in training and race, so you can cross the finish line.

1. Visualise the Results

It’s important to visualise the end result and what it will feel like when you’ve achieved your goal. This means visualising the feeling of pride and relief, the excitement and the feeling of achievement. If you’re running the J2J Half Marathon, this could mean visualising the sweat on your back as you cross the finish line!

2. Break your Goal Down into Smaller Pieces

Breaking your goals down into smaller, more task-oriented goals and setting target deadlines for those tasks can take a mountain and turn it into a few smaller hills. Taking things in smaller steps won’t overwhelm you and will add up to the big picture, but it will make even the biggest challenges feel manageable.

3. Have a Strategy, but be Prepared to Change Course

Thomas Edison said; “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Accept that setbacks happen, but don’t let them stop you in your tracks. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

4. Be Consistent

Take consistent action. Decide early on if this consistent action should be daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly. This means that even if you’re totally not in the mood, one small proactive thing can still move you closer to your goal. Without commitment to consistency, goals are harder to reach. Consistency is key!

5. Don’t compare yourself to others

When you are working hard to finish something or achieve a goal, it can be easy to compare ourselves to others who seem to be doing better or more successful.

Remember that your goals are yours only and your journey is unique. Focus on your course, whatever that may be, and putting one foot in front of the other (literally!) and trust that you are capable.

6. Lean on Family, Friends or Colleagues for Support

There’s an African Proverb that says; “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Don’t be afraid to turn to others and share your concerns or anxieties and get support and encouragement. If the J2J Half Marathon seems daunting, grab a buddy and take the challenge on together.
